Linux’s gaming prowess was not well-known before the release of Proton. Proton fixed a major flaw in the operating system. According to a recent report from Steam, Survey shows Linux marketshare hits 1%, an all-time high for the platform.
Steam issued a survey showing its market share has climbed to 1%, up 0.14 percent from last year. While not a huge feat in and of itself, these numbers do show steady annual growth in the quality of Linux’s gaming experience.
Phoronix reports that Steam’s market share on Linux was around 2% at launch, but that this percentage quickly dropped, and that Steam’s user base was quite small when compared to what it is today.
Direct-X games can be converted to Vulkan with the use of a compatibility layer called Proton.
According to the survey, Ubuntu 20.04.2 has a market share of 19.61%, followed by Manjaro Linux (11.64%), Arch Linux (10.44%), Pop! OS 21.04 (6.42%), Ubuntu 21.04 (6.42%), and Linux Mint 20.1 (5.35%).
As could be anticipated, given the abundance of Linux variants, more than 40.12 percent of users instead choose some other Linux distribution specifically for gaming.
With Valve’s recent release of Steam Deck, the future of Linux gaming looks brighter. It will be, at heart, an Arch Linux-based portable gaming console. Currently, Proton is not compatible with games that have their own anti-cheat methods built in.
Valve said the Proton gadget will run any Steam game upon release, and anti-cheat software is being developed. If this happens, demand for Linux will grow even faster than it already is. Linux-based PC users can now enjoy anti-cheat games on the console.
