LHC@Home
You’ve heard of Folding@Home? Well coming soon is LHC@Home!
As with Folding@Home, due to its complicated nature LHC@Home requires a massive amount of computing power, so they are looking for your help!
Basically the @Home stuff is to do with contributing multiple computers processing power across the internet, to effectively act like a super computer.
What is the LHC? -The Large Hadron Collider is a massive particle accelerator which lies underneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. The tunnel stretches to a distance of 27km (17 miles)
Yesterday morning proton beams were fired clockwise and then later counter-clockwise, the particles successfully travelled the full length of the colider. - Why you ask? Well scientists are looking to recreate the conditions shortly after the big bang to try to answer some big questions; such as - why do particles acquire mass? and does the Higgs boson (God Particle) exist?
Anyhoo LHC@Home is currently in development stages, it might just be available for PC to begin with, but if the massive contribution towards Folding@Home from PlayStation 3 users is anything to go by, it is possible it will become available in the near future to PlayStation 3 users.
